A Family Beginning
On On April 1, 1986, brothers Steve and Scott Kier founded KIER Construction Corporation, marking the start of a family-driven company built on integrity, craftsmanship, and hard work. From the beginning, they focused on delivering quality multi-family and commercial projects, establishing a strong foundation that continues to define KIER’s reputation in the construction industry today.

In the latter half of the 80’s, KIER Construction began its own “Industrial Age”. A couple of KIER teams commuted to Promontory, Utah, and worked there well into the 1990’s. KIER completed 28 projects for Morton and Thiokol.
-
In 1990 KIER completed the (then hyphenated) Wal-Mart in Evanston, Wyoming. KIER went on to build The Pioneer House Group Home, The Independent Union Center, The Wyoming State Group Home, The Evanston Fire Station, and Evanston Alliance Church– all in Evanston, Wyoming.
1990 -
Building Momentum
KIER’s multi-unit construction grabbed the center spotlight in the 90’s. Two townhome projects dominated this decade. The first was the 92-unit Country Cottage Townhomes in Centerville, Utah. Daybreak townhomes consisted of 54-units.
-
Among these efforts, one project stood out for its impact—the 1993 renovation of the historic Marion Hotel. KIER transformed the building into 82 single-room occupancy units for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. More than two decades later, KIER returned to give the property a second life, reintroducing it as The Sean Herrick Apartments, continuing a legacy of construction that strengthens communities.

A Decade of Growth
From medical centers to banks, and even large-scale resort developments, KIER built projects that shaped communities across the region.
2000 -
President Steve Kier and Vice President Scott Kier led KIER’s growth through the 1990s, often handling day-to-day operations themselves. KIER Construction was founded with a focus on community improvement wherever projects were built. Steve served as President of both the Weber Basin Home Builders Association and the Utah Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Scott also served two years on the ABC board, helping grow its membership.

KIER completed this project in collaboration with Big-D Construction. KIER/Big-D LLC was a joint venture company created to unite the housing experience of KIER with the large-scale commercial construction expertise of Big-D. This resort consisted of six buildings with 192 units.
-
KIER was honored to be chosen as General Contractor for this design build medical clinic with Dr. Jed Naisbitt. The 26,000 sq ft medical center was designed to accommodate a whole new concept in women’s healthcare needs.
-
The first decade of the 21st century was one that KIER could “take to the bank”. Forty-seven financial institution projects were completed during the years 2000-2010.
-
KIER shared this restrictive job-site with five other General Contractors. It is true – the greater the obstacles, the more glory in overcoming them. The entire project consisted of three buildings, all of which contain retail space on the ground floor with residential units above.
-
The Great Recession hit KIER hard around 2010, with new construction scarce after existing projects wrapped up. KIER leaned on its strengths in affordable housing, renovations, and municipal work to weather the downturn. Through persistence and dedication, the company endured, and by the late 2010s, multi-unit construction surged again.
-
From 2016 to 2019 KIER completed 9 ground up convenience stores for Maverik: two in Wyoming, one in Utah, two in South Dakota, and four in Idaho. KIER also completed five Power Moves and two Flash Remodels in various states for the Maverik group.
-
On October 8, 2018, after 32 years as President, Steve Kier became CEO and passed leadership to Clint Costley. Clint joined KIER in 1998 as an Estimator, advanced to Director of Business Development in 2004, and became Vice President in 2015. He has served as President since 2018.

Carrying the Legacy Forward
Today, KIER Construction stands as one of the Top 15 General Contractors in the region, with more than 1,900 projects completed across the multi-unit and commercial sectors. From strengthening the communities where we first put down roots to expanding our reach throughout the Mountain West, KIER continues to build with purpose—creating spaces that uplift people, foster growth, and leave a lasting legacy.
“All good men and women must take responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we could only imagine.”
